Cypress Addition
Scandinavian-Inspired Addition to a Historic Willo Residence
A comprehensive renovation and expansion of a historic home in Phoenix's Willo Historic District, featuring twin contemporary additions, a new pool, and a detached accessory structure.
Designed for an architect-in-training, the project completely reimagined the existing floor plan while respecting the home's historic character. The original residence was opened to create a more fluid, light-filled living environment, with the historic fireplace and chimney preserved as the architectural focal point of the home.
The twin additions introduce a refined Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic that intentionally contrasts with the historic structure, creating a thoughtful dialogue between old and new. Extensive use of steel and metal detailing enabled large, uninterrupted openings, slender structural elements, and crisp architectural expression throughout the project.
The renovation required overcoming several complex structural and engineering challenges, including relocating and compacting the original swimming pool, introducing expansive structural openings, and carefully coordinating a concealed mechanical system to preserve the clean architectural language.
The result is a highly personalized residence that celebrates both the craftsmanship of the original home and the precision of contemporary design, seamlessly blending historic preservation with modern living.
